My latest "Letter to the Editor"

My son is in jail for a long time (5 years) for drugs.Sentenced by Judge Kent, who painted him with the broad brush of "drug users". He has never been in trouble for any other reason, just drugs. He pled guilty of a charge that he was not all together guilty of, but the attorney advised us it was the easiest way to get out of the situation. We had NO idea that if you plea guilty , the offence can NOT be revisited. We had no idea the probation success rate in smith county was about 3 percent. Nor did we know our son was addicted to drugs. She gave him probation at first, which he failed, then he went back before her, with the same drug problem, she locked him up for 5 months then put him BACK on probation, which he failed. This last time he went before her, he asked her for some kind of treatment program and pleaded with her that he has a drug problem. She sentenced him to 5 years in prison.This was after her letter explaining how "drug offenders need rehabilitation".NOW I have a new problem. My son has a form of Muscular dystrophy, it will eventually put him in a wheelchair, but for now, other than being small, he is perfectly healthy.Because of his disease, he cannot be a trustee. His behavior is perfect, he is obedient and cooperative, he is a model prisoner. He is a drug addict and apart form the drugs he is a great guy.He can not work while in jail because on his paperwork it says he has muscular dystrophy. He does not get the good time for good behavior, because he has M.D. Is there any LEGAL recourse for this, maybe a prison disability law? To top all that off Smith county has moved him to a detention center in Waco, because of over-crowding, and we cant even visit him. We would have to drive 2 -1/2 hours for a 20 minute visit, if we got in, and that would be a chance we would have to take This roller coaster ride started the summer before his Senior year, He finished school despite the drugs. He turned 21 in jail in March. Please, can someone get SERIOUS about this drug problem. The reason our jail is so packed is that it is full of people who need REHABILITATION.
